April Craving: Fifty Shades

If you watched our April Favorites video, then you know that we are eager to share our thoughts and opinions on the Fifty Shades book series by EL James. The trilogy includes Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. We owe a huge thank you to our friend Sarah from Downtown Southern for initially turning us on to them. While we thoroughly loved and obsessed over these books, we know that the material isn't for everyone (including anyone under the age of 18). If you so desire, check out the video below to learn a little bit more about the books and why we literally craved them throughout the month of April.

If you've read the series, we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments section...just remember to keep them spoiler-free for those that haven't checked it out yet. For those of you who this has sparked an interest, tell us if you plan on going through with it. If you have any hesitations, let us know that too. We are always happy to answer any questions that you have. And if you have read the book and you hated it, then we respect your opinion. But if you have a negative opinion of it already and you haven't read a page, we say give it a chance. You might just be surprised.

Laters baby.

Friday's Fancies: Date Night...Done Right!

For this weeks Friday's Fancies, {av} gave us the task of creating the perfect "Date Night" outfit. We thought we'd do this one a little differently by showing both a "Mr" and a "Mrs" look and we kept it more on the causal side. We thought grabbing a bite to eat and then a stroll down a boardwalk somewhere, or even a night out at the movies, sounded perfect after a busy week at work. No muss, no fuss kind of ensembles. We like to keep it easy! Hope you enjoy our casual chic board this week...

Mendi's "What's In My Bag" 2.0

On Tuesday, we allowed everyone a sneak peek into the inner workings of Jayme's handbag. Today, Mendi is putting it out there for all of the world to see. If you've been hanging out with us for awhile, then you may remember our original "What's In My Bag" videos, but the things we deem important enough to carry around with us every day frequently changes, so an updated series of videos has been long overdue. As you may notice, we actually filmed this video several weeks ago, so to be honest half of the things have already changed!

We hope you enjoyed watching!! Now it's your turn to share...let us know what's hiding in your handbag.

Year End Birchbox Review

This month marks one year since signing up and receiving our very first Birchbox. Please click here to see our video where we unveiled our first box. If you aren't familiar with Birchbox then we will keep it short and sweet - it's a $10 a month subscription where you receive 4-5 deluxe samples of beauty/lifestyle products.  During the course of the year, we have been introduced to some fabulous brands and products, but we have also received boxes that left us wanting more. And because we always try to stay positive on HLNC, we wanted to write a post highlighting the standout products that we have received in our year of Birchboxes. We enjoyed other products throughout the last 12 boxes, but these are our favorite products that we have received. Here we go...

The box received last June seen here was our best box of the year. The #1 standout product from June's box has to be the full-size Laura Geller Baked Blush-n-Brighten (retails $29.50 USD). Jayme received Apricot Berry and Mendi received Honey Dipped. These blushes have been go to products since we were first introduced. We even dedicated a video solely to Laura's baked awesomeness seen here. If you haven't tried the Blush-n-Brightens, then you should!
via

We both received the Kate Spade Twirl Perfume (retails $65.00 USD - 1.7fl oz.) sample and fell in love with it's light and fruity scent. So much so that Jayme even purchased a roller ball after testing out the sample. And not that this matters, but the bottle is gorgeous, so it would be so pretty setting out on your dresser or vanity.
via

Now here's where our boxes differed slightly in June. Mendi received the Pangea Organics Facial Toner in Italian Green Mandarin and Sweet Lime (retails $26.00 USD - full-size) and Jayme received the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-free Lotion (retails $24.50 USD - full-size). Both were excellent products and were used up rather quickly. Mendi even went on to purchase a full-size bottle of Pangea Organics Facial Toner for thirsty skin in French Rosemary with Sweet Orange. And the Kiehl's is a definite buy again product!
via
via

Moving on to the July box, we both received our first food product - a KIND Fruit and Nut Almond & Apricot bar (retails $1.99 USD per bar). Now while this flavor has turned out to be Jayme's least favorite flavor, she has LOVED these bars. In fact, Starbucks sells KIND bars and Jayme's go to flavor so far is the KIND Plus Cranberry Almond. These bars pack lots of vitamins and antioxidants and make a great snack or breakfast option.
ALMOND & APRICOT

Mendi fell in love with a totally random item from our August box. We both received one black Twistband (retails $10.00 USD - set of 6) as our "extra" goodie in the box.  It was just floating in there all by itself and it made a home on Mendi's wrist immediately. Since using these Twistbands she has bought more from Anthropologie and Sephora. They make nice hair bands and also look cute on your wrist.
Twistband 12-pack
via

In October we received another fun box with a beauty product and another food item that we were both really excited about. Mendi had already discovered the Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel (retails $21.00 USD) and was ecstatic to have another on hand. And this was Jayme's first time trying anything from this brand. Love it and have and will purchase again. Also, we recommended this to our friend Heather and she loves it too! Keeps your brows in place without any crunchy feeling.
via

Then we got Tea Forte Minteas (tea mints for fitness) in Matcha Chai (retails $9.95 USD - set of 3). We love the container and the taste, though a little odd at first because they have a super light tea and cinnamon flavor. Now, we aren't sure about the "fitness" part, but we'll go with it. The mints say that they have "slimming matcha, with a tingle of cinnamon to aid in keeping you fit and feeling fab."
via

December's box brought a neat food related product called the E-BOOST Orange Natural Energy Booster (retails $28.00 USD - box of 20 packets) which is a dietary supplement powder that you add to cold water for a healthy pick-me-up. It tastes really good and is packed with vitamins B, C and D which is great for your overall health and immunity.
via

We did our first "unboxing" video in January where we were pleasantly surprised with the Stila Smudge Stick Eye Liner in Moray (retails $20.00 USD). This eye liner has been amazing! It's vibrant, waterproof and super smooth and creamy which makes this liner oh so easy to use. We would definitely purchase another one of these!
via

March's box came with a "home" product that landed in Mendi's March Favorites.  It's the Grandma Stelle's Refreshing Hand Soap in Verbena Thyme (retails $20.00 USD - full-size). Now while Mendi compared the scent to the smell of citronella candles, this zesty gel formula boasts that it does not dry out your skin like other hand soaps.
via

And in our most recent box, we received the MicrodermaMitt (retails $28.50 USD) which had us saying "huh?" at first, but has turned out to be an awesome product. It's made of all-natural floss silk and is perfect for cleaning and exfoliating your skin. And who wouldn't want this right around the time when you need to start self-tanning?
via

So here is a mini wrap-up:
12 boxes = $120.00
Out of 12 boxes, 8 had standout products
Out of 8 standout boxes, we received 6 full-size products
6 full-size products if purchased separately = $104.30

It was fun for us to look back on the past year of Birchbox, because some boxes aren't as great as others and we sometimes think of cancelling our memberships. But after seeing what we have learned and tried, we think we will stick with Birchbox for another year. For us it has been worth the $10 a month fee and we are already looking forward to our next box of surprises. Hope you enjoyed this recap!

Let us know what you think!

Jayme's "What's In My Bag" 2.0

It's been close to a year since we have shown you our original "What's In My Bag" videos, so we thought it would be the perfect time for an update. These types of videos are seen all over YouTube and we always find ourselves watching them...what can we say...we might be a little nosy.  :-)

We hope you enjoyed watching and stay tuned for Mendi's updated "What's In My Bag" video coming up in a few days.

Also, we wanted to share a fun new secret blogger swap party that we've decided to join! Our wonderful friend, Danielle from Framed Frosting is putting it all together. Just click on the button below to get more information. We'd love for some of our followers to get in on the action too!!

Looking Back at Products #2

Back in February, we started a series where we took some time to look back on products to see if there were any that just didn't live up to our expectations. You can see our first "Looking Back at Products" post here. Since then we have a few things that we just weren't that impressed with, so we wanted to share them with you guys. Just a warning though, we are discussing some products that are really loved by so many. Sorry!  :-)

Products mentioned:
Revlon Lip Butter in Creme Brulee
Schick Intuition Plus Renewing Moisture Pomegranate Razor
Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bold Gold & Bad to the Bronze
MAC Metal-X Cream Eyeshadows in Venetian Tarnish & Gold Carbon
Exude Lipstick in Red No. 1
butter LONDON Nail Polish in No More Waity Katie

Like we said, these products just didn't do it for us for one reason or another.  But, we'd love to know what you guys think if you've tried any of these.  If you have any other recommendations, please send them our way!

Thanks for watching!

April Birchbox Arrived!

It's that time again! Our once-a-month box of beauty goodies has arrived on our doorsteps! Want to take a peek?? Come on, you know you want to! You guys know how much we love to share the nitty, gritty details. You probably know by now that we've been getting Birchbox for a whole year and it's been a little bit of a love/hate relationship. We've received some amazing products in months past, but we've also gotten a few boxes that were just "meh". In fact, we have a post coming up soon that will recap some of our favorite Birchbox products that we have received. But for now, here's our April Birchbox...

~ The postcard that you see in the clear envelope is accompanied by a small vial of Atelier Orange Sanguine Cologne Absolue. While it has a citrusy scent, it's a bit too heavy for our tastes.

~ The itty bitty bar of soap from Erno Laszlo is SO cute! It smells nice too, but we both think this soap leans towards a more masculine scent, so we'll be passing it on to our hubbiez.

~ We've received Juice Beauty products in our Birchbox before and the brand didn't really leave a lasting impression on us, so we'll be anxious to see what we think about this moisturizer.

~ The first product in this box that we were able to use was the Pur Minerals Tinted Moisturizer. It claims to be a hydrator, primer, foundation and sun protection all in one. If you have more dry skin, you'll probably need to still apply a moisturizer before using this product. We did.

~ The last item is the one that we're most excited about. It may seem odd...it's a MicrodermaMitt. It actually feels wonderful against your skin -- guess that's the all-natural silkiness coming out. Self-tanning season is upon us, so the timing of this item couldn't be more perfect!

Do you subscribe to Birchbox? If you do, please drop us a comment to let us know what you received and your thoughts on the products.

44 Fun Facts About Us

As we mentioned, we were tagged by several blogger friends to do the "11 Facts Tag" and thought it would be easier for us to combine them into one video. Hope it wasn't too long as we tried to make it as short and sweet as possible. Thank you to everyone who tags us and we want you to know that while we can't always participate, we certainly do try.

Tagged by:
Hayley at Classy In KC
Betzy at Betzy's Makeup
Kasey at Buttonwood Cottage

We'd love to hear your answers to some of these questions, so feel free to leave us comments. Also, if you have a blog and want to do some of these Q&A's then be sure to let us know so we can stop by and get to know you better. We are not exactly following the "rules" on this tag, but you know what they say about rules.  :-)

Also, as promised, the link to the article on People about the Fifty Shades book series can be found here. They might not be for the faint of heart, but we love them and definitely highly recommend them to anyone (over the age of 18, of course).

One last thing, we had the pleasure of meeting one of our readers recently in the Nordstrom beauty department at Short Pump Mall (where else would we be - haha) and just want to say hi to Holly! So nice meeting you!! Hope you found lots of goodies that day and thank you so much for reading/supporting our blog.

Meet Lovely Little Things

We'd like for you guys to meet...

We've been getting to know Jess through her blog for the past couple of months now and we absolutely think that she's great...and you guys know how we like to share GREAT things. This time instead of it being the latest thing in beauty or the "it" fashion trend of the moment, this "great" thing comes in a five foot package of a spunky and sweet college student from Tampa, Florida. To get you started on your quest to get to know all of the lovely little things about Jessica, we asked her to answer ten questions.  Hopefully this piques your interest and you'll go over and pay Jessica a visit at her blog...please show her some love from Her Late Night Cravings!

What made you want to start blogging?
I was Googling how to get volume at my roots (random, I know) and I stumbled on The Small Things Blog. That led me to her sister’s blog, From My Grey Desk, which I absolutely loved. I realized that every post she wrote I could relate to, and I wanted people to be inspired by me, how I was inspired by Lauren.

What do you enjoy the most about blogging?
Hands down the relationships that I’ve built! Coming into blogging, I never would have thought that I would meet people that I would consider friends. I definitely didn’t think I’d have a blog BFF either…love you Meg! ;) I also love the fact that blogging has busted me out of my comfort zone and helped me to grow as a person. I try new things, I’m not scared to talk to people I don’t know anymore…it’s great!

Have you ever met any other fellow bloggers?
Not YET. And I emphasize the yet! I'm planning on meeting up with Candice from Teatime Thoughts sometime in April...I couldn't be more excited :)

Name 5 lovely little things that you're currently loving.
One. The fact that I am graduating from college in less than a month...AHHHH!
Two. I love the Florida sunshine and that I can wear cute dresses every day now :) I'm so adding this one to my "To Buy" list:
Three. The Hunger Games...but who isn't loving that?
Four. Essie's new Navigate Her collection...one of each please :)
Five. I'm definitely loving my new iPhone case!
Where there is Love there is Life iPhone Case

Describe your ideal way to spend a Saturday & tell us what you'd be wearing.
Let’s see. I’d sleep in until about 9. Then sit on my porch and drink my coffee (a must) while getting lost in a good book. I’d hit the gym (I love working out) and then meet my boyfriend for a picnic lunch. From there we’d go kayaking or mountain biking. Then I’d end it with a beach bonfire with mine & Adam’s (my boyfriend) whole group of friends. I probably wouldn’t look the cutest as far as an outfit goes until the bonfire – which I would probably wear this to:
simply everyday

If you moved from the Tampa area & could pick any other city in the US to put down roots, where would it be & why?
I love, love, love Tampa but after reading so many blogs about San Diego (especially Tammy’s) I seriously want to live there! The scenery is gorgeous (beaches…yes, please!) and there just seems to be so much to do. Everyone that lives there is so passionate about it and they take a lot of pride in their city – I like that.

What is your favorite makeup brand?
To be honest, I’m not a huge make up wearer. I’m a mascara (Covergirl Professional Super Thick Lash) & lip balm (Maybelline Baby Lips) kinda girl. When I do go all out and do my make up, though, MAC is my go-to brand. Probably because that’s what my best friend uses and she’s the one who taught me how to do make up ;)

Where is your favorite place to shop?
If I’m on a budget Target or Forever 21. Otherwise, Loft. I absolutely adore the fact that they have petite clothes. I’m 5’ so I have the hardest time finding clothes that aren’t too long for me! I'm recently getting into Zara and J Crew, also...thank you fashion bloggers ;)

What is your favorite trend for this spring/summer?
MINT MINT MINT! And I’m all about the statement necklace thing, too!

If you could pick any actress to play you in a movie, who would you pick?
Oh this is a hard one! I’d have to say Rachel McAdams. She is classy & fabulous. Not to mention absolutely gorgeous. I wouldn’t mind if she was pretending to be me ;)

xo,
Jessica

POTM...April Edition & Spring Sips and Styles Day Two!

As most of you probably know, we started our Polish Of The Month posts back in August as seen here and we love showcasing a special polish or polishes (because sometimes two is better than one) every single month. There are so many awesome polishes out there that they really do deserve their own post! So without further adieu, we bring you...

April Polish Of The Month

Mendi's Pick - Deborah Lippmann's Naked & Sephora by OPI's Wild About Shimmer

I've been on a nude kick lately, but of course I chose to amp it up with a shimmery top coat. Here I used two coats of Naked with a light top coat of the Wild About Shimmer. Honestly, I probably could have achieved the same look by just doing 2 or 3 coats of the shimmer polish (it's more opaque than you'd think), but Deborah had been feeling lonely lately, so I needed to pay her some attention. High maintenance polishes.  ;)

Jayme's Pick -  OPI's Strawberry Margarita

Once we posted our 2012 Spring Beauty Trends seen here, I have been obsessed with having bright pink nails. And as much as I wanted to run out and buy the Butter London polish that we featured, my mind kept going to this polish and I must say that it did not disappoint.  It's a creamy, bright, girly pink that needs no glitter or sparkle topcoat as she is perfect all by herself. I can tell that this is going to be a favorite for months to come! (note: this photo was taken a few days after my mani)

What polish(es) are you guys loving this month?? Drop us a comment and let us know!

ALSO

Today is day two of the Spring Sips and Styles blog hop. We invite you to jump on over to A La Mode Maven to check out her nautical themed post. Be sure to follow all six blogs so you can be entered to win a pair of fabulous Tory Burch flip flops courtesy of our friend Shannon at Wine Taste Girl. And if you missed the first day make sure you swing by Savvy Spice to see Dale's take on colorblocking and watermelon margaritas.

April 9th- Savvy Spice- Color Blocking and Watermelon Margaritas
April 11th- A La Mode Maven- Nautical Trends and Mojitos
April 13th- Chateau A Gogo- Statement Necklaces and Strawberry Basil Sangrias
April 16th- Henning Love- Printed Denim and Gin and Tonics
